Corten Steel Sheet

Corten steel sheet-also known as weathering steel-is a type of alloy steel engineered to form a stable, rust-like surface layer without the need for paint or protective coatings. This natural oxidising process lends itself well to projects that demand both resilience and visual appeal. As it ages, the material develops a distinct patina, creating a self-protecting finish that adds character and reduces maintenance.
We specialise in fabricating bespoke rusted steel signage and decorative sheet metal using both Corten and weathering steel. By enhancing the natural weathering cycle, we are able to deliver consistently finished pieces that meet your design specifications. This controlled process ensures an even, durable surface with the rich, weathered appearance that defines Corten steel.
Alongside rusted finishes, we also offer a blackened steel sheet finish, achieved through a controlled process and sealed with a high-quality lacquer to improve durability and deliver a refined, modern look. This finish is exemplified in the image of a feature fireplace, where the deep black tones contribute a sleek, contemporary aesthetic.

The product

We supply and distribute Corten steel sheet metal, commonly known as weathering steel. This group of steel alloys has been engineered to eliminate the need for painting, as it develops a stable, rust-like finish over time. To replicate this weathered appearance more efficiently, we use an accelerated rusting process on weathering steel sheets, achieving a mature rust patina within just a few days-compared to the 12 months or more it would usually take under natural conditions. Once the patina has formed, you can opt to apply a clear matt lacquer which will seal the surface. This protective coating is especially useful for items likely to come

When used outdoors, Corten steel sheet metal develops a rusted patina naturally through repeated wet and dry cycles. These alternating conditions are crucial for forming a well-bonded patina-without them, the weathering process will not occur correctly. Unlike mild steel, which continues to corrode until it fails, corten steel forms a stable rust layer that protects the surface from further degradation.

Corten is a specially formulated alloy that includes copper, nickel, chromium, and phosphorus. These elements enhance its resistance to corrosion and allow the material to weather attractively over time.

Frequently Asked Questions – Corten Steel Sheet

What is Corten steel and how does it differ from mild steel?

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is an alloy designed to form a stable, rust-like patina that protects the material from further corrosion. Unlike mild steel, which continues to rust until it deteriorates, Corten forms a self-sealing patina that acts as a long-lasting protective layer.

How long does it take for Corten steel to rust naturally?

Under typical outdoor conditions, Corten steel can take 12–18 months to develop a fully matured patina. The process relies on repeated wet–dry cycles. With our accelerated rusting process, we can produce an aged, weathered appearance within just a few days.

Do you supply pre-rusted Corten steel sheets?

Yes. We offer pre-weathered Corten sheets using our controlled rusting method, allowing you to achieve a consistent, fully developed patina without waiting for natural weathering.

Can Corten steel be used indoors?

Yes. Corten can be used for interior panels, fireplaces, decorative features and signage. When installed indoors, it should be supplied pre-weathered and may be sealed with a clear lacquer to prevent rust transfer onto clothing or nearby surfaces.

Does Corten steel stain surfaces or clothing?

Freshly rusted Corten steel can transfer colour onto hands, fabrics or porous surfaces. To prevent this, we can apply a clear matt lacquer that seals the patina and significantly reduces staining—ideal for interior use or touch-contact areas.

Can Corten steel be laser cut?

Yes. Corten steel is suitable for precision laser cutting, allowing for detailed signage, decorative profiles and bespoke components. Both small and large-format projects can be produced accurately.

What thicknesses and sizes of Corten steel do you supply?

We supply Corten sheet metal in a range of thicknesses and sizes, including full sheets, part sheets and custom-cut panels. Sheets can be cut to size or profiled to your design using DXF or PDF files.

Is Corten steel suitable for planters and landscaping?

Yes. Corten is widely used for planters, raised beds and landscape borders because of its durability and natural rusted appearance. It weathers well outdoors and develops a long-lasting patina that complements garden settings.

Can you fabricate or weld Corten steel?

Yes. We offer full fabrication services, including welding, folding and custom assembly. Whether working from detailed drawings or a simple concept sketch, our team can advise on the best fabrication methods for Corten steel.

Do you deliver Corten steel across the UK?

Yes. We provide national and international delivery of both bright (unweathered) Corten sheets and pre-rusted finishes, securely packaged to protect the surface during transit.
