The Use of Rusted Corten Steel in commercial interior design projects

This case study explores the innovative use of rusted Corten steel in the commercial interior design of projects we have supplied

Corten steel, known as weathering steel, is renowned for its unique aesthetic appeal and durability. Initially developed for industrial applications, its rich, rusted appearance has made it popular in contemporary interior design. This case study explores the innovative use of rusted Corten steel in the commercial interior design of projects we have supplied, highlighting its benefits, challenges, and overall impact on the design.

Project Overview

Location: Royal Liver buildings, Liverpool, UK

Design Firm: Artworks Solutions

Scope: Integration of rusted Corten steel in key interior decor features of the lower lift reveals.

Design Concept

The primary goal was to create an interior that reflected the raw, industrial elements of Liverpool dock lands were built upon. Rusted Corten steel was chosen for its natural patina and ability to evoke a sense of history within a contemporary setting.

Implementation

  1. Feature lift reveals: Large, rusted Corten steel panels were installed as the main feature wall. The panel, pre-weathered to achieve the desired rust effect, was mounted securely with hidden fastenings. Two panels on each floor also served as signage to advertise the floor number prominently.
  2. Manufacture: The fabrication of these elevator reveals began with developing the metalwork drawings into flat sheets for laser cutting. The cut blanks were then folded to shape on our CNC press brake machine. The final stage was creating the rusted finish in our patina studio and applying clear lacquer to seal the finish.

Benefits

Aesthetic Appeal:

  • Unique Patina: The rusted finish of Corten steel adds a unique industrial look, enhancing the visual interest of the space.

Sustainability:

  • Recyclable: Corten steel is fully recyclable, aligning with sustainable design practices.

Conclusion

The use of rusted Corten steel in the commercial interior design of the Royal Liver Buildings achieved the desired industrial aesthetic. Its unique patina and textural qualities added depth and character to the space, while its durability and low maintenance made it a practical choice.
