Introduction

Blackened steel, a material with a rich, textured appearance and a distinctive matte black finish, is increasingly becoming a popular choice in commercial interior design projects. This case study explores the use of blackened steel for lift reveals in the Landmark Pinnacle Building, Canary Wharf E14; the installer was The Lift Interior Company Ltd. Metal Sheets Ltd are proud to have been involved in this project, and the manufacturer and supplier of all the blackened steel lift reveal panels.

Background
Blackened steel is a form of steel that has been chemically treated to develop a darkened surface, often using a process known as “patination.” This specialised technique not only enhances the steel’s appearance but also gives it an industrial and sophisticated look while maintaining its inherent strength and durability. This finish is highly sought after in contemporary design due to its ability to add character and depth to a space. The material is commonly used in architectural wall elevations, reception desk cladding, and various commercial interior design projects.

Over recent years, blackened steel has gained significant popularity in commercial and office environments. Designers and architects increasingly seek materials that combine industrial aesthetics with a modern, refined touch. The rise in popularity is attributed to blackened steel’s ability to seamlessly integrate into diverse design themes, whether the focus is on creating a bold industrial look or enhancing a sleek, minimalist space.

At Metal Sheets Ltd, we use Corten steel sheets as the base metal for producing our blackened steel panels, although more expensive than basic mild steel sheeting we find it much easier to work with and achieve better results from the blackening process. We can achieve a finish with greater character and visual movement.

The Material: Blackened Steel
Blackened steel is a versatile material with numerous benefits, making it an excellent choice for both functional and aesthetic applications. Among its key attributes are:

  1. Visual Appeal:
Blackened steel is renowned for its unique matte finish and subtle patina, which lend an understated elegance to any space. This finish allows it to blend beautifully with a variety of design styles, from rugged industrial interiors to polished, modern environments. Its ability to harmonize with contrasting materials, such as wood, glass, and concrete, further enhances its versatility and appeal.
  2. Durability:
The treatment process used to create blackened steel enhances its durability, making it highly resistant to corrosion in interior applications. This characteristic ensures the material retains its aesthetic value even in high-traffic areas or spaces subject to wear and tear. It is particularly well-suited for commercial environments where long-term performance is essential.

Case Example: Landmark Pinnacle, Canary Wharf

Project Overview
Landmark Pinnacle, one of the tallest residential developments in Canary Wharf, London, stands as a testament to contemporary architecture and luxurious urban living. Completed in 2020, this 75-story skyscraper caters to a premium demographic, offering unparalleled views of the River Thames and the London skyline. Beyond its impressive exterior, the building’s design excellence extends to its interiors, where thoughtful material choices contribute to its overall aesthetic and functionality.

A notable example of this is the use of blackened steel in the lift reveals and elevator lobbies. This case study examines how blackened steel was implemented in these spaces to enhance the building’s design integrity while delivering practical benefits.

Design Approach
The interior designers of Landmark Pinnacle sought to create an environment that balanced strength with creativity, achieving a design that felt grounded yet inspired. Blackened steel was chosen as a key material for its industrial aesthetic, which complemented the other materials used in the project, such as wood, glass, and concrete. Additionally, its sustainability and durability aligned perfectly with the project’s overarching values.

Key Areas of Implementation:

  1. Lift Reveals and Interior Lift Cladding:
Modular blackened steel panels were expertly installed on the external wall reveals and interior wall and ceiling panels within the lift cabs. The matte finish of the blackened steel was pivotal in creating a calm and sophisticated atmosphere, as it absorbed light rather than reflecting it, avoiding an overly glossy or harsh effect. This subtle yet impactful design choice ensured the space maintained a sense of privacy and understated elegance.

Conclusion
This case study highlights the versatility and impact of blackened steel in commercial interior design. Its successful application at Landmark Pinnacle demonstrates how the material can be used to create spaces that are visually compelling, practical, and sustainable. By combining its industrial appeal with refined finishes, blackened steel stands out as an ideal material for modern architectural and design projects. Whether used in commercial, residential, or office spaces, it proves its ability to elevate interiors with its unique aesthetic and lasting durability.
