A Guide for Designers on Finishes for Copper

No. 1 Natural Copper

Natural Copper (also known as Mill Finish Copper) is copper in its raw, unaltered state, straight from a European rolling mill. The finish is semi-bright with slight variations in tone and texture, which can differ from batch to batch.

This versatile finish serves as the foundation for all our copper sheet metal finishes, showcasing its natural beauty and adaptability. It is suitable for a broad range of applications, from modern and industrial designs to more traditional styles.

No. 2 Hammered Copper

Hammered Copper (also known as Beaten Copper or Hand-Beaten Copper) is mirror-polished before being hand-crafted by our skilled coppersmiths in the UK. The unique beating pattern is entirely random, giving each sheet a distinctive and artisanal look.

Each sheet is 0.7mm thick (22 gauge) and may develop a slight curvature due to the stretching caused by the beating process. This curvature can be straightened out during fabrication, either by applying folds or bonding the sheet to a substrate and clamping.

Often used for table tops, bar tops, splashbacks.

No. 3 Brushed Copper

Brushed Copper (also known as Dull Polished Copper) features a uniform finish applied by our specialist subcontract metal polishers. This machine-applied finish creates a consistent grain that runs along the length of the sheet.

When designing with this material, it’s essential to consider the direction of the grain for the best visual effect. The brushed finish naturally develops a patina quickly, adding character and depth over time. Lacquering is essential to maintain its brushed appearance and protect it from natural patina development over time.

No. 4 Mirror Copper

Mirror Copper (also known as Polished Copper or Bright Polished Copper) features a premium double-polished finish, offering a superior quality compared to standard commercial mirror-polished copper. This finish provides exceptional reflectivity and a high-end aesthetic.

Please note that the surface has a directional grain, which becomes more noticeable when viewed at an angle. This should be considered during the design process for optimal visual results.

To maintain its brilliance, we recommend regular polishing with Brasso-type products. Over time, consistent maintenance not only preserves the mirror finish but also minimises the appearance of the directional grain. This finish is ideal for designs requiring a high-end, reflective finish.

No. 5 Satin Copper

Satin Copper is crafted using the same process as our Satin Brass finish, resulting in a smooth, matte texture that highlights copper’s natural beauty. This finish is applied with precision to create a uniform, understated look that’s perfect for both modern and traditional designs.

To preserve the satin appearance, lacquering is recommended, as the surface will develop a natural patina over time. Waxing can also be used to moderate patina development, providing an alternative to lacquering for those seeking a more natural ageing process.

No. 6 Antique Copper

Antique Copper features a rich, aged patina designed to emulate the appearance of naturally weathered copper over time. This finish showcases depth and character, with subtle visual movement between lighter and darker areas, creating an engaging and dynamic surface.

Perfect for adding warmth and history to any design, the Antique Copper finish brings timeless elegance and intrigue to a variety of projects. Waxing moderates patina development, and lacquering seals the finish. This finish is ideal for both rustic interiors and contemporary accents.

No. 7 Typical Aged Copper

Typical Aged Copper is a standard, go-to finish for creating a natural patina on copper. This artisan finish is entirely hand-applied, resulting in unique patterns and subtle variations in shades from piece to piece, ensuring no two sheets are identical.

The craftsmanship involved in this process makes it a versatile and timeless choice for a wide range of design applications. Waxing moderates patina development, and lacquering seals the finish.

Nos. 8, 9 & 10 Green Copper

Green Copper highlights the natural beauty of patinated copper, featuring its iconic green hues that evolve over time. This finish replicates the authentic patina formed on copper exposed to outdoor elements, typically achieved after 10 or more years in the environment.

We offer this finish with varying ratios of green to copper, customisable to meet your design needs. Each piece is inherently unique, showcasing the artistry of the process.

To preserve and protect the integrity of this stunning finish, Green Aged Copper is exclusively offered lacquered, ensuring long-lasting durability and maintaining its vibrant aesthetic.

Nos. 11, 12 & 13 Blue Copper

Blue Copper is an artisan-crafted patina finish that highlights the captivating interplay between vivid blue patina and natural copper tones. Each piece is entirely unique, with the ratio of blue to copper varying slightly due to the handcrafted nature of the process.

The patterns and intensity of the blue patina differ with every sheet, resulting in one-of-a-kind statement pieces that cannot be precisely replicated. To preserve and protect this exceptional finish, Blue Aged Copper is exclusively offered lacquered, ensuring its bold visual impact and artisan quality endure over time.

Nos. 14 & 15 Flame Patina Copper

Flame Patina Copper (also known as Flamed Copper or Flame Painted Copper) is a stunning artisan finish created using a flame painting technique. By carefully applying a hot flame to the copper surface, the artist brings out a vibrant spectrum of colours and tones, ranging from fiery oranges and golds to deep purples and soft blues.

The outcome is highly interpretative and unique, as each piece reflects the artist’s creativity and the natural reaction of the copper to the heat. No two pieces are the same, making Flame Patina Copper a true statement finish, ideal for artistic and bespoke design projects.

No. 16 Aged Riveted Copper

Aged Riveted Copper is a bespoke finish developed for a designer, embodying the raw charm of industrial décor. This striking finish combines patchwork copper panels with hand-applied rivets, creating a textured, layered aesthetic that exudes character and craftsmanship.

The panels are further enhanced with dark copper patinas, adding depth and a sense of age to the overall design. This finish is ideal for walls, decorative panels, or bespoke furniture in industrial-themed interiors.

No. 17 Green Patina Copper

Green Patina Copper (commonly referred to in the industry as Patina Copper) is the closest replication to the natural patina formed on copper exposed to the elements for over 10 years. This finish reflects the natural ageing process, showcasing a soft, verdant green surface that exudes authenticity and timeless appeal.

Highly favoured by architects and designers, this pre-patinated copper is often used in high-end building projects to achieve a weathered aesthetic without waiting decades for natural ageing. Perfect for creating a distinguished, historic look, Green Patina Copper is as natural and organic as you can get for architectural and design applications. The colour and tones can vary between sheets and batches, adding to its authenticity.

No. 18 Distressed Green Patina Copper

Distressed Green Patina is a fascinating and entirely unique byproduct of the Green Pre-Patinated Finish process. Found on the reverse side of the sheet, this finish is completely uncontrolled, featuring natural linear streaks of green patina interspersed across a rich, brown-aged copper surface.

This distressed finish is perfect for projects embracing organic aesthetics or rustic charm.

No. 19 Bronze Dapple Copper

Bronze Dapple Copper is a bespoke finish created by our skilled artisan patina applicators to meet the specific vision of an interior designer. This unique process results in a striking dappled pattern, blending warm bronze tones with darker copper hues to produce a textured, artistic effect.

This finish is perfect for feature walls, tabletops, or decorative panels, adding individuality and character to any space.
