Understanding sheet metal weight is important when specifying materials for architectural metalwork, table tops, wall panels, signage, reception counters and bespoke fabrication projects. This guide provides approximate weights per square metre for common metals including brass, copper, stainless steel, aluminium, zinc and mild steel, helping designers, fabricators and specifiers estimate material loads during the planning stage.
| Material | Approx. Weight at 1mm Thickness |
|---|---|
| Mild Steel, Corten, Galvanised & Zintec | 7.85 kg/m² |
| Stainless Steel 304 / 316 | 7.90 kg/m² |
| Stainless Steel 430 | 7.75 kg/m² |
| Brass | 8.44 kg/m² |
| Bronze | 8.80 kg/m² |
| Copper | 8.92 kg/m² |
| Aluminium | 2.70 kg/m² |
| Zinc | 7.20 kg/m² |

Sheet weight can affect handling, fixing methods, substrate choice, transport, installation and structural support. This is particularly important when metal is being used as part of an architectural or interior feature rather than as a simple flat sheet.
Typical applications where weight should be considered include:
The examples below show how quickly sheet weight changes depending on material and thickness:
As a simple guide, sheet metal weight can be estimated using the material weight at 1mm thickness, multiplied by the sheet thickness and area.
Example: A 1.2mm copper panel measuring 1m x 1m would be calculated as:
8.92kg × 1.2 = 10.70kg approximately
For larger panels, multiply by the total area in square metres. For example, a panel measuring 2m x 1m has an area of 2m², so the result would be doubled.
For custom sheet sizes and detailed calculations, use the Sheet Metal Weight Calculator on our Metal Offcuts website. This allows you to enter the length, width, thickness and material to estimate the approximate weight of a specific sheet or fabricated panel.
At Metal Sheets Ltd, we supply and fabricate sheet metal for commercial, architectural and interior design projects. Our expertise covers decorative metalwork, wall cladding, reception counters, table tops, signage and bespoke fabricated components.

When weight is important, we can advise on suitable material thicknesses, fixing methods, folded returns, backing boards, welded details and installation considerations. For decorative metalwork, reducing thickness can sometimes lower weight without compromising visual impact. For high-traffic environments, worktops, counters and signage may require thicker materials or fabricated construction depending on the application.
We also offer subcontract patina finishing for architects, designers, sign makers and fabricators seeking bespoke aged, antique and specialist metal finishes.
All figures shown are approximate and intended as a practical estimating guide. Actual sheet weight may vary slightly depending on alloy, grade, finish, rolling tolerance and manufacturing process.
