A Guide for Designers on Finishes for Brass

No. 1 Natural Brass

Natural Brass, also known as Mill Finish Brass, refers to the surface finish of the brass as it comes directly from manufacturing. The appearance can vary between batches and thicknesses, ranging from bright to nearly matte.

At Metal Sheets, we source our brass sheets from the same supplier to ensure consistency. Wherever possible, we fabricate projects using sheets from the same batch to maintain uniformity. As experienced metal sheet stockists, we have excellent control over this process.

All the brass finishes showcased in our gallery begin as Mill Finish Brass, offering a versatile starting point for various applications and finishes.

No. 2 Satinised Brass

Satinised Brass features a matte texture applied to natural brass, resulting in a smooth, understated appearance. To preserve this elegant finish, lacquering is essential. Without sealing, the brass will develop a natural patina over time, which can be moderated with regular waxing.

Over time, this finish evolves into a rustic, character-filled look, adding depth and uniqueness to your project.

No. 3 Hammered Brass

Hammered Brass, also referred to as Hand-Hammered or Hand-Beaten Brass, is crafted by traditional coppersmiths using time-honoured techniques.

The process begins with natural brass sheets, which are polished to a mirror finish by a specialist. The distinctive beaten pattern is then applied manually using a hammer and punch, resulting in a random, artisanal texture.

Each sheet is 0.7mm thick, and the hammering process naturally stretches the metal, creating a slight curvature. This curvature is partially rolled out before stocking. During fabrication, any applied folds or bonding to a substrate helps flatten the sheet for a smooth and stable finish.

Typical applications are bar tops, table tops, splashbacks, interior features

No. 4 Mirror Brass

Mirror Brass, also referred to as Polished Brass or Bright Polished Brass, features a superior reflective finish achieved through a specialist double-polishing process. This finish results in minimal visible grain, offering a premium appearance surpassing standard commercial polished brass.

Although all mechanically polished sheets have some degree of grain, it is directional and more noticeable when viewed at an angle. This should be considered during the design phase to ensure the best results for your project.

Regular maintenance with Brasso or similar metal polish (Or Bio-mex for eco-friendly) preserves the sheet’s brilliance and minimises the visibility of the grain over time.

Typically used for brass interior display features, sales counters, table tops,  vanity mirrors, and decorative accents.

No. 5 Burnished Circles Brass

Burnished Circles Brass begins as a Mill-Finished Brass Sheet and is enhanced with a hand-applied circular polishing pattern. This process creates an artisanal finish with a striking, handcrafted aesthetic. For those seeking a more consistent appearance, a machine-polished version with symmetrical circles is also available.

To maintain its unique appeal and prevent rapid patina development, this finish is best preserved with lacquering.

No. 6 Brushed Brass

Brushed Brass, also known as Dull Polished Brass, features a uniform grain pattern achieved through a machine process using abrasives. The grain runs consistently along the sheet’s length, creating a sleek, linear texture.

Once the peelable protective film is removed, the brushed finish develops a patina quickly. For those who prefer to preserve the original look, lacquering is strongly recommended.

No. 7 Light Aged Brass

Light Aged Brass offers a softer, subtler variation of the Dark Aged effect. The finish is achieved through a shorter ageing process, allowing flexibility in the final appearance to suit different design needs.

Waxing slows further patina development, while lacquering seals the surface for long-term protection, ensuring the finish retains its unique aesthetic.

No. 8 Dark Aged Brass

Dark Aged Brass is a quintessential choice for creating a rich, vintage aesthetic. This timeless finish features a deep patina that enhances the natural warmth and character of brass.

To protect the surface, waxing helps slow further patina development, while lacquering provides a durable seal for added longevity.

No. 9 Lineal Burnished Antique Brass

Lineal Burnished Antique Brass is a striking finish originally developed for a designer, combining a linear texture with an antique aesthetic. This patina blends modern design with vintage charm, making it a versatile choice for a variety of applications.

To preserve the finish, waxing slows the ageing process, while lacquering offers long-lasting protection.

Typically used for brass cladding wall panels.

No. 10 Antique Brass

Antique Brass is a patina that replicates the appearance of a well-aged brass surface. The finish features unique tonal variations, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.

This patina can also be applied to brass flat bars and other brass sections, providing a cohesive look for larger projects. Waxing slows patina development, while lacquering seals the surface for long-term durability. Antiqued brass flat bars are very popular.

Used for cladding panels and brass interiors.

No. 11 Turquoise Brass

Turquoise Brass, also referred to as Blue Brass, is a bold, artisan patina that combines vibrant turquoise hues with warm brass undertones. The result is a dramatic, weathered effect with intricate patterns that make each sheet a one-of-a-kind creation. Beautiful for a brass splashback.

This finish is exclusively offered lacquered to protect its delicate patina and ensure long-lasting vibrancy and durability.

Typically used for interior design features, kitchen splashbacks.

No. 12 Ombre Antique Brass

Ombre Antique Brass is a sophisticated patina featuring a graduated transition from dark antique tones to a satin finish. This bespoke effect was originally created for a designer and is now a signature part of our collection.

This finish can also be applied to brass flat bars and other sections, providing a cohesive design element. Lacquering is recommended to maintain the intricate gradient and protect the patina.

Applications include interior design features and cladding.

No. 13 Burnished Antique Brass

Burnished Antique Brass is a refined version of the antique brass finish, further enhanced to achieve a rich, burnished effect. This patina accentuates the aged character of brass while adding depth and texture.

For preservation, lacquering is recommended to protect the surface and maintain its sophisticated aesthetic.
