Antique Metal Sheets

Antique Metal Sheets

Metal Sheets Ltd have developed three new patina finishes for sheet metal Antique Brass, Antique Copper and Antique Zinc

Antique metal sheets are hand-finished patinated surfaces developed in our patina studio for brass, copper, and zinc. Each surface is individually treated using a controlled process of air, moisture, and heat exposure to create a natural, time-worn appearance. These antique patinas bring authentic vintage character to interior design, furniture, and architectural metalwork.

Introducing Our Antique Metal Sheets

Our team has created three unique patinas for brass, copper, and zinc. Each finish enhances cladding, splashbacks, and decorative panels while preserving the strength and character of the base metal.

How It’s Done

Every patina is hand-applied in our patina studio, ensuring no two sheets are the same. Layers of controlled oxidation and colour treatment develop over time, producing unique depth and tone. The results can be explored in our Flickr Gallery.

To protect and enhance the finish, we offer either beeswax or clear lacquer coating:

  • Beeswax – enriches colour and allows gentle ageing for a natural, evolving look.
  • Clear lacquer – available in standard or hard-wearing grades, ideal for splashbacks, counters, and decorative panels.

Applications & Projects

Antique brass, copper, and zinc patinas are popular for signage, plaques, planters, and interior features. Our JJ Mack Building project in London used hundreds of square metres of Antique Brass Sheets for wall cladding and architectural detailing.

We can produce panels up to 3 m × 1 m or 8 ft × 4 ft, ready for installation or further fabrication.

Aged vs Antique Metal Finishes – What’s the Difference?

The terms aged metal and antique metal are often used interchangeably, but in practice they describe two related yet distinct finish styles. Understanding the difference helps designers and specifiers choose the most appropriate surface for their project.

Aged metal finishes are developed to replicate the early to mid-stages of natural ageing. These finishes typically feature soft tonal variation, subtle surface movement, and a balanced patina that feels calm and refined. Aged finishes are widely specified for interior cladding, cabinetry, furniture, and architectural features where understated character and consistency are important.

Antique metal finishes take the ageing process further, producing deeper colour, richer contrast, and more pronounced surface texture. Antique patinas are designed to evoke long-term natural weathering and are often chosen for heritage-inspired interiors, feature installations, signage, and decorative metalwork where visual depth and drama are desired.

At Metal Sheets Ltd, both aged and antique finishes are created using controlled patination techniques in our dedicated patina studio. This approach allows us to achieve the appearance of natural ageing while maintaining stability, repeatability, and suitability for fabrication, cutting, and installation.

For most interior applications, aged finishes offer a refined, versatile solution, while antique finishes provide a bolder aesthetic statement. In many cases, the distinction lies in tone and intensity rather than performance, and sample panels can be supplied to support specification.

Antique Sheet Metal — FAQs

What makes antique metal different from aged metal?

Antique patinas are deeper and more complex than aged finishes, combining stronger colour variation, oxidation, and surface texture. While aged metal replicates the early to mid-stages of natural ageing, antique finishes are developed to evoke decades of weathering and visual depth, making them better suited to feature installations and heritage-style interiors.

Can antique patinas be used on large architectural panels?

Yes. We produce patinated sheets up to 3 m × 1 m, ensuring seamless coverage for interior cladding and façades.

How are antique finishes protected?

Each sheet can be finished with beeswax for a softer look or clear lacquer for durability. Lacquer is recommended for bar fronts, wall panels, and high-touch areas.
