Pewter Sheet

Pewter is a relatively soft and malleable metal, which makes it ideal for a wide range of fabrication techniques. Pewter sheets can be manipulated through casting, hammering, turning, spinning, and engraving, offering excellent versatility for both decorative and functional applications. We regularly work with pewter sheet metal to produce bespoke bar tops and table tops, which benefit from the material's smooth finish and elegant appearance. In addition to interior features, pewter metal sheets are commonly used in the creation of costume jewellery, where they serve as a practical and attractive substitute for platinum due to their similar aesthetic and much lower cost.

Pewter sheet metal remains a niche product, and it’s fair to say that many people are not overly familiar with its properties or common uses. At Metal Sheets Ltd, we specialise in supplying high-quality pewter metal sheets and are always happy to advise on suitable options for your project.

The most widely used grade of pewter sheet metal in the UK is Pewter 92. This grade is standard in many industries due to its excellent balance of strength, workability, and appearance. Pewter 92 is composed of 92% tin (Sn), 6% antimony (Sb), and 2% copper (Cu), and is compliant with EN611 specification. We also offer an alternative grade, Pewter 93, which is available by special order.

For fabrication purposes, we primarily use 1.5 mm thick pewter sheets, which provide an ideal combination of durability and formability. This thickness is particularly well-suited to table tops and bar tops. Our spun round table tops are also produced u

Applications

Pewter is often described as a “living” metal due to its unique ability to change appearance over time. As it interacts with its surroundings, through handling, cleaning, and exposure to liquids or air, it naturally develops a patina that adds depth and character. This evolving surface quality is a hallmark of pewter sheet metal and is particularly valued in decorative and hospitality settings. Scuffs from daily use, minor spills, and regular cleaning all contribute to this natural ageing process, giving pewter metal sheets a warm, lived-in appearance that enhances their visual appeal.

All of our products are fabricated to order and entirely bespoke, crafted by skilled artisans using high-quality pewter sheets tailored to your specifications.

Hospitality: We specialise in pewter bar tops and table tops for the hospitality industry. These are made using 1.5mm thick pewter sheet metal and are available in various sizes, with round tops ranging from 300mm to 900mm in diameter. Whether you’re fitting out a small boutique venue or a large-scale commercial bar, we can produce custom pieces to suit your project.

As an example of our capabilities, Metal Sheets Ltd recently supplied and clad an 18-metre-long pewter bar top for a high-profile hospitality venue at The O2 Arena in London.

Frequently Asked Questions – Pewter Sheet Metal

What is pewter sheet metal made from?

Our pewter sheets are manufactured using lead-free Pewter 92 to EN611 specification. This premium alloy contains 92% tin, 6% antimony and 2% copper, offering excellent workability, strength and a bright, attractive finish suitable for both decorative and functional applications.

Is modern pewter safe to use?

Yes. Modern pewter alloys are lead-free and fully compliant with current health and safety standards. They are safe for use in interior fittings, jewellery, tableware, decorative items and hospitality environments.

How does pewter differ from other metals such as stainless steel, aluminium or copper?

Pewter is a much softer and more malleable metal. It can be shaped by hammering, spinning, turning, casting and engraving with far less force than harder metals. Unlike copper or bronze, pewter does not oxidise aggressively and instead develops a soft, subtle patina over time.

Does pewter sheet develop a patina?

Yes. Pewter naturally develops a warm, characterful patina through handling, cleaning, and exposure to the environment. This lived-in appearance is particularly valued in hospitality and interior design settings. We can also apply professional patination for a more antique or aged look.

Can pewter sheet metal be laser cut?

Yes. Pewter can be laser cut, routed or profiled to create intricate shapes and components. We accept DXF or PDF drawings for custom parts and decorative features.

Is pewter suitable for bar tops and table tops?

Absolutely. Pewter is widely used for bar tops, table tops and interior features due to its smooth texture, tactile feel and distinctive appearance. At 1.5 mm thickness, it provides an excellent balance of formability and durability for high-use hospitality settings.

Can pewter sheet be soldered or welded?

Pewter is not welded in the same way as steel; instead, it is soldered using low-temperature methods. It can also be folded, hammered, turned, engraved and spun into bespoke shapes and components.

What thicknesses and sizes of pewter do you supply?

We stock pewter sheet metal in 1.5 mm thickness and supply standard sheet sizes of 2000 mm × 1000 mm. Custom sizes, cut pieces and spun round tops (300–900 mm) are also available.

Is pewter used for jewellery?

Yes. Pewter is commonly used for costume jewellery and decorative accessories. Its soft, bright appearance offers a cost-effective alternative to platinum or silver and is easy to cast, engrave and polish.

Do you offer samples of pewter sheet?

Yes. We provide complimentary pewter samples for architects, designers and educational institutions. To request samples, email sales@metalsheets.co.uk.

Do you deliver pewter sheets across the UK?

Yes. We offer secure national and international delivery for full sheets, custom-cut panels and bespoke fabricated pewter components.
