Galvanised Steel Sheet

Galvanised Steel Sheet — technical information, applications, and trade supply from Metal Sheets Ltd.

We supply high-quality hot dip galvanised steel sheets suitable for construction, fabrication, industrial use, and architectural applications. This guide explains how galvanised steel works, where it performs best, and how it compares to alternative materials.

What Is Galvanised Steel Sheet?

Galvanised steel sheet is mild steel coated with a bonded layer of zinc through the hot dip galvanising process. During manufacture, steel is immersed in molten zinc at approximately 450°C, creating a metallurgical bond between the steel substrate and the protective zinc layer.

This zinc coating forms a durable barrier that significantly reduces corrosion. If the surface is scratched, the surrounding zinc provides sacrificial protection to the exposed steel, helping to prevent rust spread.

Under typical UK environmental conditions, galvanised steel can provide a service life of up to 25 years before maintenance is required, depending on expo

Technical Information

Modern European-produced hot dip galvanised sheets are typically supplied with a plain, non-spangled finish. Due to EEC regulations restricting the use of lead in the galvanising process, the traditional large spangle appearance is no longer standard within EU manufacturing.

Galvanised steel is well suited to:

  • Cold forming and bending
  • Profiling and fabrication
  • Mechanical fixing
  • Exterior and semi-exposed applications

Guillotine cutting helps draw zinc across the cut edge, offering a degree of additional corrosion protection along exposed edges.

Applications of Galvanised Steel Sheet

Galvanised steel sheet is widely used across multiple industries due to its strength, corrosion resistance, and cost efficiency.

Construction & Roofing

Commonly specified for roofing sheets, wall cladding, framing components, and general structural applications.

Rainwater Goods

Used in gutters, downpipes, drainage systems, and ducting where moisture exposure is consistent.

Industrial & Engineering

Suitable for machinery covers, HVAC ductwork, storage enclosures, and general fabrication.

Security Panels

Frequently used for protective door panels, shutters, and reinforced cladding.

Interior & Decorative Use

Galvanised steel is increasingly used in retail fit-outs, industrial-style interiors, and furniture elements. Sheets may also be pre-rusted for decorative or photographic applications.

Frequently Asked Questions – Galvanised Steel Sheet

What is galvanised steel sheet?

Galvanised steel sheet is mild steel coated with a bonded layer of zinc through the hot dip galvanising process. The zinc layer protects the underlying steel from corrosion.

How long does galvanised steel last?

In typical UK environments, galvanised steel can last up to 25 years before maintenance may be required, depending on exposure conditions.

Can galvanised steel be cut or formed?

Yes. It is suitable for cold forming, bending, and profiling. Guillotine cutting helps maintain protective zinc coverage along cut edges.

Can galvanised steel rust?

Over time, the zinc coating will gradually weather. Once the zinc layer is consumed, corrosion of the base steel may occur. However, the zinc layer significantly slows this process.

Is galvanised steel suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. It is widely used for roofing, cladding, ducting, and agricultural structures due to its corrosion resistance.
