Copper Door Handles

Installing copper products like copper door handles is an adjunct to good hand hygiene and cleaning practices.

Introducing Metal Sheets’ new line of antimicrobial copper Door Handles. Crafted from solid 99.9% pure copper sheet, these handles are designed to help reduce the spread of infections caused by bacteria, yeasts, and viruses.

Copper’s natural antimicrobial properties make it an ideal choice for high-traffic touch surfaces like door handles.

Copper Door Handles: Durable, Antimicrobial & Made in the UK

Copper door handles offer an ideal balance of style, durability, and hygiene — making them particularly suited to environments where cleanliness and performance are essential. At Metal Sheets Ltd, we manufacture solid copper handles from 99.9% pure antimicrobial copper, bringing together proven hygienic benefits with the warm, premium appearance of natural copper. We also supply a wider range of hygienic antimicrobial door handles for high-risk and specialist environments.

Originally developed during the Covid-19 pandemic to meet increased demand for hygienic touch surfaces, our copper door handles remain a popular specification across medical, public, commercial, and hospitality environments.

Why Choose Solid Copper Handles?

Copper is one of the only materials with natural antimicrobial properties, actively killing harmful bacteria, viruses, and yeasts on contact. Unlike stainless steel or aluminium — which allow microbes to survive for hours or even days — copper continues to reduce contamination between regular cleaning cycles.

This makes copper door handles ideal for:

  • Doctors’ surgeries & medical centres
  • Dental practices
  • Public buildings
  • Restaurants & cafés
  • Offices & factories
  • Schools, nurseries & universities

Over time, copper develops a natural patina that enhances its visual character without diminishing its antimicrobial effectiveness.

How We Manufacture Our Copper Door Handles

Each handle is manufactured in-house at our Liverpool facility using high-precision metalworking equipment:

Laser Cutting

Handle blanks are laser cut from 3mm thick, 99.9% pure copper sheet, ensuring clean lines, accuracy, and consistent fixing positions.

CNC Press Brake Forming

Our CNC press brake forms each handle to the correct ergonomic angle, guaranteeing strength, repeatability, and long-term performance.

Finishing

Handles are finished with a smooth satin surface. We keep the copper untreated so its full antimicrobial benefit is maintained.

Maintenance & Patina Development

Natural copper will gradually oxidise, forming a protective patina that varies depending on environment and usage. This ageing is entirely normal and does not reduce copper’s antimicrobial abilities.

If you prefer to restore the bright satin appearance, a copper-safe cleaner such as Bar Keepers Friend can be used to refresh the finish.

Applications & Complementary Copper Hardware

Our copper door handles can be used as standalone upgrades or paired with other copper architectural fittings. We also produce:

Our standard Copper Push-Pull Handle measures 240mm x 75mm, with bespoke sizes and fixing options available for new-build or retrofit projects.

Upgrade Your Space with Solid Copper Door Handles

Whether you are improving hygiene in a workplace, upgrading a reception area, or replacing outdated hardware, our solid antimicrobial copper hardware offers a durable, attractive, and highly effective antimicrobial solution. Every piece is made to order at our workshop in Liverpool, ensuring quality and consistency.

Copper Door Handles – Frequently Asked Questions

Are hygienic copper handles really antimicrobial?

Yes. Copper is naturally antimicrobial and has been shown to kill a wide range of bacteria, viruses and yeasts on contact. Unlike stainless steel or plastic, copper does not just hold contamination on the surface – it actively reduces microbial survival between cleaning cycles.

Do your antibacterial copper handles need to be lacquered?

No. We supply our copper pull handles unlacquered to maintain their full antimicrobial performance. Lacquering or coating the copper would create a barrier between the metal and any microbes on the surface, reducing the hygienic benefit.

Where are copper door handles most commonly used?

Our pure copper door hardware is widely used in doctors’ surgeries, dental practices, hospitals, public buildings, offices, restaurants, cafés and education facilities. They are ideal for any high-traffic area where hygiene and durability are important.

Can you make bespoke sizes and fixing patterns?

Yes. In addition to our standard 240mm x 75mm Copper Push-Pull handle, we can manufacture bespoke lengths, widths and fixing hole patterns to suit new doors or retrofit projects. Simply send us your requirements and we will advise on the best solution.

Will the patina affect the antimicrobial properties?

No. The natural patina that forms on copper over time does not remove its antimicrobial properties. The surface will change in colour as it oxidises, but the copper remains active against microbes. If you prefer a brighter look, the finish can be refreshed with a suitable cream cleaner.
