Copper Inlay Strips for Joinery & Furniture Makers

Copper Inlay Strips for Joinery & Furniture Makers

Copper inlay strips and panels for joinery, furniture makers and interior fit-outs, supplied custom sizes.

Copper inlays are increasingly specified by joinery workshops, furniture makers and interior designers who want a warm, distinctive detail that stands out from traditional timber or brass. At Metal Sheets Ltd, we manufacture copper inlay strips, panels and feature inserts from new sheet and solid section, supplied in custom sizes and finished ready for installation.

Why Choose Copper for Inlays?

Compared with other metals, copper brings a unique combination of warmth, colour and character. It sits comfortably alongside dark-stained timbers, oak and engineered boards, and can be finished either bright and contemporary or with a hand-aged patina for a softer, more traditional feel.

  • Rich, warm tone that complements a wide range of wood species
  • Works equally well in modern and rustic interiors
  • Available as thin strip, full inset panels or solid bar sections
  • Can be patinated for a more aged, textured appearance
  • Machined and guillotined in-house for accurate, repeatable sizes

Applications for Copper Inlay Strips

Copper inlays are used across many areas of bespoke joinery and furniture production, including:

  • Dining tables, console tables and coffee tables
  • Bar counters, restaurant tables and hospitality furniture
  • Cabinet doors, drawer fronts and wardrobe panels
  • Wall panelling and feature cladding details
  • Reception counters and meeting room tables
  • Doors, screens and decorative joinery features

Copper Inlay Formats: Strips, Panels & Solid Bar

We manufacture copper inlays in three main formats — sheet-cut strips, inset panels and solid bar profiles.
All are produced from new copper sheet and section held in stock.

Sheet-Cut Copper Inlay Strips

For fine lines, borders and recessed features, we cut copper strip directly from sheet. Typical thicknesses are:

  • 0.7 mm – fine decorative lines and light furniture detailing
  • 0.9–1.2 mm – general-purpose inlays and panel work
  • 1.5–2 mm – deeper recesses and higher-wear surfaces
  • 3 mm – heavy-duty, engineered sub-bases and feature inserts

Strip widths are guillotined to your required size, from narrow accent lines up to wide feature bands.
We stock copper sheet in full 8 ft × 4 ft (2440 mm × 1220 mm) sheets, allowing large one-piece inserts and long continuous strips to be produced.

Solid Copper Bar Profiles

Where a deeper edge or more robust profile is required, solid copper flat bar can be used as an inlay or edge detail.
Unlike brass, which is supplied with sharp square corners, copper flat bar has a small 1 mm corner radius that gives a slightly softer edge once installed.

Popular copper profile sizes for inlay work include:

  • 1/2″ × 3/16″ (approx. 12.7 mm × 4.8 mm)
  • 5/8″ × 1/8″ (approx. 15.9 mm × 3.2 mm)
  • 1/2″ × 1/4″ (approx. 12.7 mm × 6.35 mm)
  • 3/4″ × 1/8″ (approx. 19.05 mm × 3.2 mm)

Copper Inlay Panels & Feature Inserts

For larger areas, we can supply full copper panels to be recessed into the surface of a table, door or wall panel.
These can be supplied in a natural finish, brushed, or pre-patinated to suit the design.

Copper Inlay Finishes

Because copper responds so well to surface treatment, a wide variety of looks can be achieved from the same base material.
We commonly supply:

  • Natural copper – as-milled or lightly brushed, ready to patinate or lacquer
  • Brushed copper – a soft directional grain for modern interiors
  • Antique / patinated copper – hand-aged surfaces with darker tones and variation
  • Mixed finishes – natural and patinated copper used together for contrast

Installation Considerations

Most copper inlay projects are completed by experienced joinery workshops or flooring contractors.
We recommend the following general approaches:

Recessed Installation

A routed channel or pocket allows the copper inlay to sit flush with the surface. This is the cleanest way to integrate strips and panels into timber.

Adhesive Bonding

Copper strips and panels are usually fixed with a suitable flexible adhesive, sometimes with light clamping during curing to ensure even contact.

Finishing & Protection

Inlays can be left to develop a natural patina, or sealed with clear lacquer or wax depending on the expected wear and desired maintenance level. In hospitality settings, a protective coating or glass overlay may be specified for heavily-used table tops.
