The Storage and Compatability of Zinc Sheets

Transport and Handling

When working with zinc sheets, it is important to always store and transport them in dry and ventilated conditions. Do NOT store zinc outdoors. Keep temperature variations to a minimum to avoid condensation as this will promote oxide formation. Zinc is a reactive metal, and wet storage can cause white oxides to form, (white rust). Wear gloves whilst handling the sheets to avoid fingerprint staining.

Once installed outdoors as a roof or feature, natural weather conditions will cause a patina to develop on the zinc, which not only protects it but also adds to its charm. The presence of white rust and finger prints detracts from the aesthetic of  the metal, fingerprints will blend in over time but white rust will likely leave witness marks.

Compatability

When discussing the storage and compatability of zinc sheets, compatibility is key when working with zinc, as it is a reactive metal that can react with certain materials. Some examples of acceptable contact products with zinc include galvanized steel, aluminium, stainless steel, lead, and compatible woods such as pine, spruce, Scots pine, and poplar.

On the other hand, there are also non-compatible products with zinc that should be avoided, such as non-compatible woods like larch, oak, chestnut, red cedar, and more, as well as mortar, rosin paper, bituminous membranes, products with fire retardant and preservation treatments, acidic cleaners, brass, cast iron, chrome, and bitumen.

Zinc sheets can also be supplied in different finishes, such as an artificial pre-weathered finish (Quartz) or hand-patinated finish by our craftsmen, which adds a weathered and distressed look to the metal. These finishes can be used both indoors and outdoors, with the option to use beeswax added protection.

It is important to note that zinc is a relatively soft metal when used for tabletops, bar tops etc it will show signs of wear over time, such as dents and abrasions. This should be appreciated as part of the character of the metal, but for a pristine appearance, stainless steel may be a better alternative.

Another consideration when discussing the storage and compatability of zinc sheets is that zinc is reactive to acidic foods and substances, so it is important to understand that natural zinc is a “living” material and discoloration is part of its desirable character. Cleaning zinc surfaces can be done with a mild detergent solution, avoiding chlorides and abrasive compounds. Stains can be reduced with vinegar.

When it comes to mastics and adhesives, it is recommended to use polyurethane, non-acetic silicone, and MS Polymers that are compatible with zinc sheet. TheGluePeople.co.uk offers a suitable range of adhesives and mastics for working with zinc sheet.

Natural zinc sheet appearance is shiny and silvery as shown here, but when discussing the storage and compatability of zinc sheets, it is noted that white deposits form on the sheet which spoil the appearance. Not shown here.
